New Letter-Writing Tool Online

Compassion has done a fabulous job with the launch of the Letter Writing Tool on the Compassion website. I was fortunate to pilot this new tool before it went live on the web. I absolutely love how we can choose from several templates and upload pictures for our sponsor children! What an upgrade from the generic stationary!

If you haven't had the chance to write your sponsor child yet, I highly encourage you to write before October 31st so that you child will receive it in time for Christmas. Also, if you haven't given a Christmas gift to your child, please also do that before the deadline. Happy Letter Writing!

World Food Day and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Money is tight nowadays, but I can only imagine how people live in poverty in other areas.Things as simple as food and meeting basic human needs are a struggle. Its amazing how we can forget to show God our gratitude for the little things. Here is some information about two days that brought awareness to these issues.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October, the day on which the Organization was founded in 1945.
The objectives of World Food Day are to:
  • encourage attention to agricultural food production and to stimulate national, bilateral, multilateral and non-governmental efforts to this end;
  • encourage economic and technical cooperation among developing countries;
  • encourage the participation of rural people, particularly women and the least privileged categories, in decisions and activities influencing their living conditions;
  • heighten public awareness of the problem of hunger in the world;
  • promote the transfer of technologies to the developing world; and
  • strengthen international and national solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty and draw attention to achievements in food and agricultural development.

International day for the eradication of poverty 2011

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
The 2011 Commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP) will be held on Monday, 17 October at United Nations Headquarters in New York, focusing on the theme "From Poverty to Sustainability:People at the Centre of Inclusive Development".

With global attention focused on the upcoming Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), it is critical to draw attention to the importance of poverty eradication for building sustainable futures for all. People living in poverty face increasingly difficult challenges as climate change, environmental degradation and rising food prices threaten their livelihoods and survival. The path to sustainable development must ensure that people living in poverty are included in decision-making processes, and that concrete action is taken to respond to their needs and demands.

Please take a moment to pray for Compassion International and its mission to help address the needs of God's children and their families.

Double Mail Call! - Part II

This next letter was another letter from Chatchai in Thailand. This was the second letter this month! It was dated August 31, 2011 and was received September 30, 2011. This letter was written by dictation to a project volunteer.

Dear Maria,

Greetings! I'm writing on behalf of Chatchai because he cannot write by himself. He's so glad you write him the letter and send him the pictures (this was when I first piloted the new online letter writing tool!!) He really likes them a lot. You asked him whether his school was on the break or not. He says he goest to the school every weekday. What did you do on his break? During the school break, he helped his parents take care of his younger sibling, get the water, and wash dishes. Importantly, he studied at the project too. He's so happy having a great time at the project. He wast to know if it rains in your country or not. You asked him if he has summer class or not. Yes, we do have summer class here but he's still young to take it, but his older sister attends summer class. You asked him when the last time he read and studied was. He said he reads and studies everyday. His older sister teaches him to read every day. Lastly, I want you to pray for his family and his study as well. He wishes you happiness. May God bless you always.

Love and regards,

Chatchai, written by project volunteer

Here is the picture that he sent with the letter. I love getting these! I love how I am hearing from him so much!

The Fight to Five

Sevenly is an organic funding movement that raises capital and awareness for the world's greatest causes.This week, Sevenly is supporting Compassion International. This campaign specifically targets the Child Survival Program. This program helps save the lives of babies and mothers in poverty utilizing local churches to assist mothers of at-risk infants and toddlers. Mothers can give their children a fighting chance for healthy development with the supplies and training provided by your donations.

This specific t-shirt raises the awareness to help children "fight" for their lives in order to reach their 5th birthday. Without Compassion International's intervention, many kids never get the chance to reach this milestone. For every t-shirt purchased, Sevenly will donate $7 dollars to help Ethiopian mothers provide supplies to their children.  Please check out the video below and make a purchase here.

Mail Call from Thailand!!

Yay!!! Another letter from a sponsor child! I love these days. This letter is from my dear Chatchai. It was dated August 1, 2011 and was received on September 29, 2011. The letter dictated to a child worker at his Compassion project since he still cannot write on his own.

Dear Maria, whom I respect and love

Hello. I am writing on behalf of Chatchai because he can't really write by himself yet. I asked him about what he wanted to write and he tole me according to his feelings, then I wrote as he told me to. He is so cute and he said that he is glad that he got a chance to draw a picture for you again. He would like to know if you and your family are fine or not. He and his family are all fine. You asked about his school year. The school year here starts in May and finishes in October. He will prepare to sing. He will sing and listen to stories about Jesus. He said the the weather here is the same as what it is over there; some days its hot and its raining some days. He said that he will practice to pray so much so he can pray for your family more. He will pray for you and your family. He is doing well at school and healthy. He said the he gets to learn how to sing and dance at the project and study every good thing. He would like you to take care of yourself and to be healthy. He would like you to pray for his family. May God bless you.

With love and best regards,

Child worker, on behalf of Chatchai

I cannot wait until I can see his own handwriting when he learns to write. In the mean time, I am enjoying the drawings that he has done for me.
